Former State Parramatta MP Geoff Lee has a new gig – appointed to a major executive role at Western Sydney University.
Lee has been appointed Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Western Sydney and External Engagement.
He will be responsible for strengthening and deepening the University’s relationships and presence across western Sydney.
The appointment sees Professor Andy Marks move on, with confirmation he will finish up at Western Sydney University (WSU) today.
Marks joked to News Corp that in the short term at least, he’d be back to being a drummer in a rock band – a reference to his previous life as a musician with The Vanilla Chainsaws and Crow.
WSU Vice-Chancellor, Distinguished Professor George Williams AO said Professor Lee’s deep commitment to the University and the western Sydney region will be integral to advancing the University’s strategic ambitions as it implements its future strategy moving forward.
“This new role is integral to the University’s plans and ambitions for the future, which includes ensuring we can deliver on our mission of student success, impactful research and stronger Western Sydney communities,” he said.
“Geoff brings to this new position a wealth of experience across academia, industry and the highest levels of government. As a parliamentarian, Geoff was integral to the transformation of Parramatta into the thriving metropolis it is today.”
“He is deeply embedded in the western Sydney community and is renowned as an energetic and driven leader who is unceasing in his advocacy for our community. Geoff’s passion will help ensure we continue to drive our University forward and seize upon new opportunities in Western Sydney as they emerge.”
Professor Lee has been serving the University since 2023 as Professor and then Associate Dean Engagement in the School of Business, following his retirement from NSW Parliament.
He has a long-established connection with Western Sydney University, having a successful academic career at the University from 2004-2010.
“As Western Sydney’s only dedicated university, Geoff and I share the view that Western Sydney University must continue to reflect our communities’ aspirations and be a catalyst for regional prosperity. It is our students who lead the growth of our region’s social, intellectual and economic capital,” Williams said.
