Most people live within two worlds – reality, and the world within their phones and other devices.
This year, the City of Parramatta is working to make both of those realms safer by joining a global campaign called 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence.
This year, a primary focus is the growing issue of digital abuse. Running from November 25 to December 10, the City will roll out a four-week social media campaign highlighting how digital tools like phones, apps, social media and tracking devices are increasingly being misused to harass, intimidate and control.
“This is about education, empathy and action because everyone deserves to feel safe both online and offline – whether they are at home or in the community,” said City of Parramatta Lord Mayor, Councillor Martin Zaiter.
“Abuse doesn’t always leave bruises, it can happen through phones, apps and messages and it can be just as harmful.”
Key events throughout the campaign include the installation of a Wish Tree in the PHIVE foyer, a Walk to Say No to Domestic Violence, a UNiTE to End Digital Violence Forum, and a documentary screening.
These events fall in line with the City’s commitment to the Prevention of Domestic and Family Violence Action Plan which was endorsed by the Council in 2022.
“By speaking up and shining a light on this issue, we are helping victims feel seen, heard and supported. Our City stands united in saying abuse in any form is never okay,” Zaiter said.
