Granville resident and St John Ambulance volunteer Alan Law has been named the 2025 St John Ambulance NSW Metropolitan Volunteer of the Year.
The award was presented by Her Excellency the Honourable Margaret Beazley AC KC, Governor of New South Wales, in recognition of Law’s extraordinary leadership, operational excellence, and more than two decades of dedicated community service.
Law began his journey with St John Ambulance in 2002 as a university student and has since become one of the organisation’s most respected and experienced operational leaders.
Now serving as the Operations Officer at Granville Combined Division, he is best known for his management of event health services at Qudos Bank Arena, one of the busiest and most prestigious entertainment venues in the world.
Under Law’s leadership, St John Ambulance has supported over 400 major events at Qudos Bank Arena since 2018, delivering more than 10,000 volunteer deployments.
His professionalism, reliability, and commitment to excellence have made him the trusted face of St John to both the venue and his fellow volunteers. His work has set the benchmark for volunteer-led event health services nationwide.
“Alan is an exceptional leader whose quiet professionalism and care for his team underpin everything he does,” said Isabelle Moutia, Divisional Superintendent of Granville Combined Division.
“He has built an environment where volunteers feel valued, safe, and inspired to perform at their best. His impact on our members and our reputation in the wider community cannot be overstated.”
Beyond his extensive operational commitments, Law is a devoted mentor and role model.
He ensures his team is well supported, providing opportunities for members to develop clinical, liaison, and command skills. He has also contributed to the Bicycle Emergency Response Team (BERT) since 2010, taking on a leadership and mentoring role in recent years at high-tempo events across Sydney.
His clinical excellence has been formally recognised with Meritorious Care Awards in both 2023 and 2024, following incidents where his actions directly contributed to saving critically unwell patients.
Despite volunteering nearly 500 hours in 2024 alone, he continues to balance his commitment to St John with his full-time role as a registered nurse in critical care and emergency.
“Alan exemplifies everything it means to be a St John volunteer, dedicated, compassionate, and quietly outstanding,” said Moutia.
“He leads by example, and his service over more than 20 years has strengthened not just our division, but the entire organisation.”
The Volunteer of the Year Award recognises St John members who demonstrate exemplary devotion to duty and embody the organisation’s values of service, integrity, community, and compassion.
Alan Law’s long-standing leadership and tireless service make him an exemplary recipient of this honour.
