One of the stalwarts of the Parramatta River, the MV Dawn Fraser has made its final journey with its namesake aboard for one last trip along Sydney Harbour.
Built in 1992 by NQEA in Cairns, the Dawn Fraser has served the people of New South Wales for more than three decades, most notably on the F3 Parramatta River route.
Over its lifetime, the vessel has travelled 544,676 nautical miles, the equivalent of circling the globe more than 25 times.
Since entering service in 1992, the ferry has completed 68,946 trips, averaging six services per day, 178 per month and more than 2,000 per year, connecting customers and communities between Parramatta and Circular Quay.
Australian legend Dawn Fraser AC was aboard last week for the final time, surrounded by her family, friends and the crew who have cared for the vessel for more than three decades.
“It’s been a daily reminder to travellers of the power of sport, the Olympic spirit, and what’s possible if you aren’t afraid to push yourself to your absolute limits,” Fraser said.
“Three decades of passengers have looked up, seen my name and perhaps thought of something patriotic, inspiring or even a little cheeky. I’m pretty chuffed.”
Transport for NSW Coordinator General Howard Collins said the MV Dawn Fraser has given more than 30 years of service to the people of Sydney.
“Nearly 70,000 trips and more than half a million nautical miles is an extraordinary achievement for any vessel,” Collins said.
“As she prepares to leave Sydney Harbour, we acknowledge the crews past and present who have kept this ferry operating safely and efficiently every single day.”
Named in honour of Australian swimming legend Dawn Fraser, the vessel carries the legacy of one of the nation’s greatest sporting icons, a symbol of endurance, determination and pride that reflects the ferry’s long and distinguished service to the people of Sydney.
“This vessel has averaged six trips a day for over three decades, an incredible operational record,” Collins said.
“From peak hour commuters to weekend travellers, the Dawn Fraser has played a vital role in connecting western Sydney with the Harbour.”
The final journey was a chance for Dawn along with her family and friends to farewell a ferry that has been part of daily life along the Parramatta River for a generation.
